Hospitals, Practices Face July 8 Accessibility Deadline

Federal accessibility requirements are rapidly evolving, with upcoming US Department of Health and Human Services compliance deadlines that affect hospitals and medical practices.

A recent article from The Doctors Company, the ACS’s member benefit medical liability insurance program provider, outlines key obligations under the accessibility rule and highlights practical steps providers can take to reduce risk and ensure compliance across care settings.

The most pressing compliance deadline, which goes into effect July 8, requires that “all healthcare providers' offices, clinics, emergency rooms, hospitals, outpatient facilities, and multi-use facilities that use exam tables and weight scales have at least one weight scale and one exam table that meet the standards for accessible medical diagnostic equipment [MDE].”

These MDEs require that scales and exam tables be wheelchair-accessible and height-adjustable, respectively, so individuals with mobility disabilities can use this equipment safely and effectively.

The article also covers web, mobile app, and kiosk accessibility requirements. Compliance deadlines for these provisions are May 2027 for healthcare providers with 15 or more employees and May 2028 for providers with fewer than 15 employees.
