GSV Hospitals Screen Nearly Twice as Often for Postoperative Delirium

In the latest episode of ACS podcast, The Operative Word from JACS, host Dr. Tom Varghese is joined by Drs. Sarah Remer and Marcia Russell to discuss their recent JACS article, “Hospital Variation in Postoperative Delirium Screening and Outcomes in Older Adult Surgical Patients: A National Analysis of Geriatric and Non-Geriatric Surgery Verification Hospitals.” Authors of the study found that in a national cohort of adults aged 75 years and older, ACS Geriatric Surgery Verification (GSV) hospitals demonstrated significantly higher postoperative delirium screening rates than non-GSV hospitals. While delirium positivity was similar, among screened patients, GSV hospitals had shorter lengths of stay and fewer prolonged hospitalizations.
