Barriers still exist for women surgeons in leadership roles at academic institutions, surgical organizations, and private practice settings around the world.
In an upcoming October 27 ACS webinar, “HeForShe: Overcoming Barriers in Surgery,” participants will hear from Narmeen Taha Mustafa, MBChB, FACS, a surgeon in Iraq who was recipient of the ACS/American Society of Breast Surgeons International Scholarship in 2022. Dr. Mustafa graduated from the University of Salahadeen College of Medicine in 1995 and completed her doctorate in general surgery in 2006, becoming the first woman general surgeon in the Kurdish region of Iraq and breaking the glass ceiling in a very unlikely region of the world.
Dr. Mustafa, who has a passion for health education and conducts workshops and seminars on breast cancer awareness with non-governmental health organizations throughout Kurdistan, will share the challenges, obstacles, and successes she experienced while becoming a successful leading surgeon in an area dominated by male surgeons. She will also speak on her success in bringing surgical breast cancer awareness and care to her community and region.
The webinar is hosted by the ACS International Relations Committee and the International Subcommittee of the Women in Surgery Committee.
