International Café: Kuwait

Salman Al-Sabah, MD, MBA, FRCSC, FACS Governor, Kuwait

Salman Al-Sabah, MD, MBA, FRCSC, FACS, is the director of surgical research and a consultant surgeon at Al-Amiri Hospital and Royale Hayat Hospital Kuwait. He is also an assistant professor in the faculty of medicine at Kuwait University. He is currently on the committee to develop a new curriculum for the board of general surgery with the Kuwait Institute for Medical Specialization.

As president and founder of the Kuwait Surgical Association (KSA), Dr. Al-Sabah plans to foster scientific and professional performance and increase the involvement of Kuwaiti surgeons in the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He plans to nurture collaborations between the ACS and the KSA and to increase the number of members and ACS Fellows through participation in meetings and activities both locally (Region 17) and internationally.

Dr. Al-Sabah graduated from Kuwait Medical School and completed both his residency in general surgery and a masters of management and health leadership at McGill University in Montreal, QC. He also completed his fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at McGill University. Dr. Al-Sabah is certified by the American and Canadian Boards of General Surgery.

He has participated in several international presentations as a speaker or moderator, and his publications have won many accolades and awards in the field of minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. His principle clinical and research efforts are focused on metabolic/bariatric surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and advanced endoscopy. In addition to his own interest in research, he is currently a mentor to residents, medical students, and masters students in Kuwait and sponsors a best research prize to foster and promote interest in research in the State of Kuwait. Dr. Al-Sabah is a recipient of the Medical Student Association Award for supporting and inspiring students to conduct medical research in Kuwait (2012–2013).

He is also the director of the First and Second Kuwait Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery Conference and the First Gulf Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society Meeting. He has chaired numerous conferences, including the Bariatric Endoscopic Surgery Trends (BEST) Conference and the First Kuwait Trauma Conference. Dr. Al-Sabah is a member of many international and national surgical and medical societies and is a board member and founder of the Gulf Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society in the Gulf and the Kuwait Obesity Surgery Association.
