SCR Training and Resources

The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program® (ACS NSQIP®) will provide ongoing education, training, and support to Surgical Clinical Reviewers (SCRs). It is recommended that SCRs have a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of one year of experience in one of the following settings: hospital surgery department, surgery clinic, clinical research, or medical records. A nursing degree is recommended, but not required. Non-nurses in the SCR position should have a nurse mentor at the hospital that is accessible to help the SCR answer difficult clinical questions. Experience in clinical chart review and good communication and relationship-building skills is highly desirable. SCRs work closely with the Clinical Support team from ACS NSQIP, who provide training, ongoing support, and certification for all SCRs.

SCRs have access to the following training and resources:

  • Initial Training Sessions. All SCRs receive formal training conducted by the ACS NSQIP Clinical Support Team. Each site will be entitled to one training session for the lead SCR hired by the hospital. Training for any additional SCRs will cost $2,500 per individual.
  • Ongoing SCR Education, Testing, and Support.
    • Regular SCR Conference Calls and Webinars are held to facilitate ongoing education on the program, including data definitions, data collection, operational issues, data analysis, quality improvement strategies, and other questions and issues that may arise.
    • Continuous support will be provided to SCRs by the ACS NSQIP Clinical Support team via a dedicated support e-mail address.
    • An annual certification exam for SCRs to ensure understanding of ACS NSQIP case selection and application of variable definitions.
    • A robust online FAQ database for common clinical questions.
    • Sessions at the ACS NSQIP National Conference to review difficult variable definitions and case studies.
    • Inter-Rater Reliability Audits for a minimum of five percent of hospitals annually to ensure proper data abstraction and meet with the hospital’s SCR and clinicians to discuss data collection and workflow.
  • Participating hospitals will also receive SCR Hiring Qualifications Documents and an Operations Manual that provides detailed guidance on how to implement and use ACS NSQIP.
