Emergency General Surgery Verification Program

Participation Process

Site Visit Preparation

Hospitals interested in participating in the EGS Verification Program are encouraged to review the standards and contact the ACS EGS-VP team to discuss the program in relation to the individual hospital’s goals. Sites will be encouraged to gather their key team members and stakeholders under the leadership of the EGS Program Medical Director in order to facilitate a thorough pre-review and site visit process.

Site Visit Structure

The EGS Verification Program site visit is comprised of 2 half-day sessions. Meetings are scheduled with the EGS Program Medical Director, EGS Program team, hospital-level leadership, frontline surgeons, and multi-disciplinary providers engaged in the EGS program, including anesthesia, nursing, and allied health services.

Required Documentation

Hospitals are required to complete and submit a Pre-Review Questionnaire (PRQ) addressing questions and documentation requirements associated with the standards. Patient charts with associated quality review documentation will also need to be prepared for the reviewers.

Preparation Timeline

Sites are recommended to apply 6–12 months prior to an anticipated site visit.
