Excelsior Surgical Society Membership

Applications for membership in the Excelsior Surgical Society are now currently being accepted. Please also note that nominations are now being accepted for Elected Office in the Excelsior Surgical Society as well. Details on Membership and Officer Nomination criteria are detailed below.

  • The 2018 Excelsior Business Meeting will be held in conjunction with the 2018 ACS Clinical Congress.

  • Excelsior Surgical Society/Edward D. Churchill Lecture Nomination. This lecture is named for the Excelsior Surgical Society, a group of 80 medical officers who met for the first time in 1945 at the Excelsior Hotel, Rome, Italy. This lecture also honors Col. Edward C. Churchill, a famous surgeon and consultant to the U.S. Army in the World War II Italian Theatre, who presented the first keynote address at the meeting. Please use this form to nominate the Churchill lecturer for the 2019 Clinical Congress.
  • Army Major John P. Pryor Lecture Nomination. On Christmas Day 2008, Major John Pryor, MD, FACS, was killed by mortar shrapnel while serving as a combat surgeon in Mosul, Iraq. A dedicated trauma and military surgeon, Dr. Pryor devoted much of his career after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S. to serving his country. The Army Major John P. Pryor Lecture is dedicated to Dr. Pryor’s enduring legacy and is delivered annually at the Excelsior Surgical Society meeting held in conjunction with the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress. Please use this form to nominate the Pryor lecturer for the 2019 Clinical Congress.
  • Annual Dues. All fees and annual dues shall be recommended by the Executive Council and approved by a vote of the majority of the members of the society at the annual meeting, and shall be due and payable upon presentation of invoices. The annual dues for Excelsior Surgical Society members shall be $100. Dues are waived for honorary and distinguished members, medical student members and members over 70 years of age. Excelsior Surgical Society dues are in addition to ACS membership dues. The Excelsior Surgical Society membership year coincides with the United States federal government fiscal year, operating on a fiscal calendar of October-September. Dues notices shall be emailed to members annually in October.

Membership in the Excelsior Surgical Society

Membership Classes

Active Membership

Active Members shall be Fellows, Associate Fellows, Residents, Medical Students, and Affiliates of the College who are currently serving on active duty in a branch of the United States Uniformed Medical Service; currently active or inactive Armed Forces Reserve or National Guard; or are retired or discharged under honorable conditions from a United States Uniformed Medical Service after at least one year of service. Active members may hold elected office, have voting rights, and will pay annual dues to remain in good standing. After verification of good standing with the American College of Surgeon and verification of military service, eligible members will automatically become Active members upon application.

Associate Membership

Associate Members shall be Fellows, Associate Fellows, Residents, Medical Students, and Affiliates of the College who do not meet the requirements for current or prior military service. Associate members have voting rights, will pay annual dues to remain in good standing, but may NOT hold elected office. After verification of good standing with the American College of Surgeon eligible members will automatically become Associate members upon application.

Distinguished Membership

Distinguished Members are nominated by an Active Member and approved by a majority of the Executive Council. Distinguished Members meet the same requirements and have the same privileges as Active Members. Distinguished Members have voting rights and are physicians or scientists who have gained professional prominence by his/her contribution to the advancement of military surgery in general or the Excelsior Society in particular. Annual dues are waived for Distinguished Members. 

Honorary Membership

Honorary Members are nominated by an Active Member and approved by a majority of the Executive Council. Honorary Members do NOT vote or hold office unless duly appointed per Article IX, Section 1. Honorary Members are NOT eligible for Active Membership. Honorary Members are physicians or scientists who have gained professional prominence by his/her contribution to the advancement of military surgery in general or the Excelsior Society in particular or are a member of the community who has shown particular interest in military surgery and provided support to the Excelsior Society. Annual dues are waived for Honorary Members.
