S. Bobby Mukkamala, MD, FACS

At the 2025 American Medical Association (AMA) Annual Meeting this week in Chicago, Illinois, S. Bobby Mukkamala, MD, FACS, an otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeon in Flint, Michigan, was installed as AMA president for a 1-year term.

It was just a few months ago that Dr. Mukkamala underwent surgery to remove an 8-cm temporal lobe tumor on the left side of his brain. After which, he thanked the physician community and vowed to continue the fight to improve patient access to care and to reduce health inequities.

An ACS Fellow since 2022, Dr. Mukkamala served as chair of the AMA Substance Use and Pain Care Task Force before becoming president-elect in 2024.

Also at this week’s meeting in Chicago, Willie Underwood III, MD, MSc, MPH, FACS, a urologist in Buffalo, New York, was elected AMA president-elect. Dr. Underwood will become AMA president in June 2026.

“It is an incredible honor to be chosen by my peers to represent physicians and the patients we serve at this critical moment for health care and medicine,” he said.

Within the AMA, Dr. Underwood has served on the AMA Board of Trustees, as AMA board chair, and as chair of the AMA Resident and Fellow Section.

His other roles include serving as president of the Erie County (New York) Medical Society, as a member of both the AMA and National Medical Association Commission to End Health Care Disparities, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s Urology Residency Review Committee, the American Urological Association Public Policy Council, and the board of commissioners of The Joint Commission.

Dr. Underwood has more than 25 years of experience in urologic surgery, which includes more than 15 years in robotic urologic surgery. He has co-authored more than 120 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and published abstracts, as well as presented or participated in many grand rounds, webinars, and TV and radio interviews.
