The ACS Senior Fellows Society, established in 2025, recently elected its first leaders. Tyler G. Hughes, MD, FACS, will serve as the inaugural society Chair, and Joseph A. Corrado, MD, FACS, will be the inaugural Vice Chair.

In their roles, Drs. Hughes and Corrado will lead Society in its mission to serve as a program for senior and retired surgeons that allows continuous career-spanning engagement with ACS activities and helps foster bidirectional interactions across generations of surgeons.

The Senior Fellows Society recently held its first event, a well-attended February 11 webinar that urged surgeons of all ages to “Start Preparing for a Successful Retirement” (a recording of the webinar will be available to view soon). Additional events will be posted in the future.

Dr. Hughes is a retired general surgeon in Salina, Kansas, who until recently was dean and clinical professor of surgery at The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Salina. He has been a longtime leader in the ACS, serving as a First-Vice President, Secretary, Governor, Founding Chair of the ACS Advisory Council for Rural Surgery, and frequent contributor to ACS publications, among other roles.

Dr. Corrado is a general surgeon in Mexico, Missouri, where he was chief of surgery, chief of staff, and cancer liaison at the former SSM-St. Mary’s Audrain Hospital. Dr. Corrado has been extensively involved in leaders in the ACS Missouri Chapter, as well as serving as an ACS Governor, a Commission on Cancer State Chair, and a member of the Health Policy Advisory Council.
