ACS Reached Millions in November to Emphasize Importance of Lung Cancer Screening

December 6, 2022

November was Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and the ACS and its Commission on Cancer (CoC) made waves throughout the US by spreading the message about the importance of lung cancer screening.

In addition to creating a public-facing web page summarizing key facts about lung cancer and lung cancer screening, two cancer care surgeon experts participated in video interviews that aired across the US on major media platforms. Timothy Mullett, MD, MBA, FACS, CoC Chair, and Daniel Boffa, MD, MBA, FACS, a member of the CoC Executive Committee, spoke with news programs ranging from Western Mass News in Springfield, MA, to NBC 15 in Mobile, AL, sharing important information for the public. These interviews had nearly 100 airings in November alone, which had the potential to reach millions of individuals.

In addition, just before Thanksgiving, Dr. Mullet wrote an opinion article describing how lung cancer screenings can save the lives of individuals and their loved ones. The article appeared in more than 1,000 online publications that are read by more than 100 million people in the US, including the Chicago Tribune, the Houston Chronicle, the Orlando Sentinel, the San Francisco Chronicle, and many others in major media markets.

As recent research has shown, the College’s return to screening initiatives have been very effective tools in getting the word out regarding the importance of preventative cancer management, and the media push in November and in the future will build on that strong scientific foundation.
