Upcoming Global Surgery Engagement Opportunities

Expand Your Skills. Broaden Your Impact.

Prepare for meaningful engagement in global surgery by attending DC02: "Global Health Competencies for Surgeons" on Saturday, September 26, 8:30 am–4:00 pm ET, at Clinical Congress 2026 in Washington, DC.

Designed for residents, fellows, and practicing surgeons, this interactive course explores the foundations of global surgery, ethical and equitable partnerships, cultural humility, personal preparedness, and sustainable approaches to improving access to surgical care worldwide. Participants will also have opportunities to network with experienced global surgery leaders and earn six CME credits.

New this year: The course registration fee has been significantly reduced, making this educational opportunity more accessible than ever. Residents can register for the course for $175. Even better, Clinical Congress registration is free for residents who register by the Early Bird deadline of August 10, making this an affordable opportunity to expand your knowledge and connect with leaders in global surgery.

Applications Are Open for the Global Health in Surgery Certificate Program

The ACS Health Outreach Program for Equity in Global Surgery (ACS H.O.P.E.®) is now accepting applications for the 2027 ACS H.O.P.E. Global Health in Surgery Certificate Program, a yearlong, blended learning experience designed to equip surgeons, trainees, and global health professionals with the knowledge and skills to advance equitable surgical care worldwide.

Through expert-led modules, faculty mentorship, collaborative learning, and a capstone project, participants will explore key topics including global surgical systems, health equity, sustainable partnerships, research, advocacy, and capacity building. The program is designed for individuals at all stages of their global surgery journey—from those seeking foundational knowledge to experienced practitioners looking to expand their leadership and impact.

Enrollment is limited, so we encourage you to apply early. Applications are due October 5, and the program begins in January 2027.

PS108: Humanitarian Surgical Outreach at Home and Abroad: Reports of the 2026 ACS-Pfizer Surgical Volunteerism and Humanitarian Award Winners
September 27: 12:45 pm ET 

This plenary session showcases the 2026 ACS-Pfizer Surgical Volunteerism and Humanitarian Award winners who will share insights into their motivation, accomplishments, and lessons learned related to surgical outreach. As innovators and leaders in surgical outreach, the honorees' stories will create a robust portrayal of this complex work. Together, they will form the basis for a lively question-and-answer segment at the conclusion of the session.

PS216: Global Engagement
September 28: 9:45 am ET

The Global Engagement Panel Session will feature invited speakers exploring timely topics in global surgery, innovation, and technology. The session will also include presentations from the 2025 ACS H.O.P.E. Resident Research Scholars, who will share insights from their work in Hawassa, Ethiopia, and Lusaka, Zambia. Attendees will receive updates on ACS H.O.P.E. programs and initiatives and learn about opportunities to engage in the organization's global surgery efforts.

PS231: Beyond Burnout: Restoring Purpose, Autonomy, and Joy in Surgical Practice
September 28: 2:30 pm ET

Surgeons are facing unprecedented levels of burnout fueled by moral injury, reduced autonomy, bureaucratic overload, and the challenges of navigating corporate health care systems. This panel brings together diverse perspectives to explore actionable strategies for restoring meaning, autonomy, and joy in surgical practice. Topics will include minimizing moral injury throughout a surgical career, the role of volunteerism as a tool for personal and professional renewal, the growing appeal of locum tenens as a flexible practice model, and ways for surgeons to assert their value in a system increasingly driven by metrics. The session will highlight both individual and institutional solutions that can promote well-being, career longevity, and a renewed sense of purpose in surgery.

ACS H.O.P.E. Reception
September 28: 6:00–7:30 pm ET

The ACS H.O.P.E. Reception is an opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and build new relationships with the global surgery community. Join volunteers, peers, mentors, scholars, and friends of ACS H.O.P.E. for an evening of networking, conversation, and celebration. The reception will also feature reflections from the recipients of the ACS-Pfizer Surgical Volunteerism and Humanitarian Awards, recognizing their contributions to improving surgical care around the world.

Join the ACS H.O.P.E. Global Surgery Expert Lectures, held every third Thursday at 8:00 am CT. This ongoing series brings together global experts to share innovative approaches and practical lessons that advance equitable surgical care worldwide.

The August lecture will examine the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in surgery, highlighting how computer vision, wearable technologies, and large language models can enhance surgical care. Drawing on practical experience from low-resource environments, the lecture will emphasize why surgeons are essential to ensuring AI is developed and implemented responsibly to improve patient outcomes.
