The 40th annual meeting of the Point/Counterpoint Acute Care Surgery Conference is scheduled to be held May 4–5, 2023 in Baltimore, MD. The conference is designed to have a broad appeal to general surgeons and other specialty surgeons, along with emergency physicians and intensivists, nurses, paramedics, and others who actively participate with a high-performance team. As one past participant highlighted, "This is an appropriate course for anyone who has had to take an emergency call or care for the critically ill." The Point/Counterpoint guarantee is to have expert faculty, to facilitate meaningful intellectual exchange, and to enhance the overall educational experience of every participant.

Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) was developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT). The ACS COT provides medical direction and content oversight for the PHTLS program.

PHTLS courses improve the quality of trauma care and decrease mortality. The program is based on a prehospital trauma care philosophy, stressing the treatment of the multisystem trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. This may require an approach to the trauma patient that varies from traditional treatment modalities. PHTLS promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care. It is based on the belief that, given a good fund of knowledge and key principles, emergency medical services (EMS) practitioners are capable of making reasoned decisions regarding patient care. The PHTLS course is continuously updated and revised to keep up with the advances in the field, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) guidelines and feedback from PHTLS participants.

NAEMT’s PHTLS is recognized around the world as the leading continuing education program for prehospital emergency trauma care. The mission of PHTLS is to promote excellence in trauma patient management by all providers involved in the delivery of prehospital care through global education.

Trauma Outcomes and Performance Improvement Course (TOPIC) is brought to all members of the trauma system team who participate in the ongoing assessment, evaluation, and improvement of trauma care. The Society of Trauma Nurses developed TOPIC in response to the need for education and better understanding of the performance improvement process in trauma care. TOPIC focuses on the ongoing assessment of the continuum of trauma care with a structured review of process and discussions of strategies to monitor trauma patient outcomes.

TOPIC is taught in a one-day interactive format, customized to best meet the needs of the individual trauma care provider participants in all levels of trauma centers who have varying levels of experience with trauma performance improvement. The modules are taught with a focus on didactic, operational definitions, sample tools, case study examples, and take-home points.

The annual Las Vegas Trauma, Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery conference has become one of the best-attended such courses in the world, being sold out the last several years. Their faculty is made up of physicians who are in the trenches dealing with the most complex surgical challenges. This program offers comprehensive continuing education in the treatment of critically ill and injured patients, stressing current basic and cutting-edge guidelines and technology for evaluation, diagnosis, and management. Content is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of those caring for ill and injured patients in rural, urban, and suburban hospitals. The Mattox Course is scheduled for March 27–29, 2023.

The Medical Disaster Response is a one-day course scheduled for March 26, 2023.

The 43rd Annual Advances in Trauma Meeting will take place December 7–9, 2022, at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown in Kansas City, MO.

The seminar will benefit trauma surgeons, general surgeons, emergency physicians, trauma coordinators, trauma nurses, critical care nurses, surgical residents, orthopedic surgeons, vascular surgeons, primary care physicians who care for injured patients, mid-level providers, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.
