Where Seconds Matter Campaign

The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT) is launching a national campaign to build stronger relationships with members of Congress by inviting them to visit trauma centers in their home states during the August recess. The goal is to educate policymakers on the critical role of trauma care, highlight system challenges, and advocate for policies that strengthen trauma systems, workforce, and emergency preparedness.

This initiative aims to ensure that at least one member of Congress (House or Senate) visits a trauma center in every state during August. The campaign will be state-driven, regionally coordinated, and nationally supported by ACS COT to maximize impact.

Objectives

  1. Strengthen Relationships – Establish long-term connections between trauma surgeons and Congressional representatives.
  2. Educate Policymakers – Provide members of Congress with firsthand exposure to trauma care challenges and opportunities.
  3. Advocate for Trauma-Related Policy – Discuss legislative priorities that support trauma care, including funding, workforce issues, injury prevention, and emergency preparedness.
  4. Promote Public Awareness – Leverage media and social platforms to highlight the importance of trauma systems and advocacy efforts.
