Dr. Mike M. Mallah is Assistant Professor of Surgery and Director of Global Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. A board-certified trauma surgeon and surgical critical care specialist, Dr. Mallah has dedicated his career to advancing surgical care globally, with experience spanning over 60 countries across six continents. As Chair of the Global Surgery Committee for the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST), Dr. Mallah leads international initiatives to strengthen surgical capacity worldwide. His global health work includes humanitarian missions with the UN/World Health Organization in Gaza, surgical volunteer operations in Ecuador with Cinterandes Foundation, and establishing surgical education partnerships in Kenya, South Africa, and Uzbekistan. He has secured over $35,000 in grants to support global surgery programs and international surgical training exchanges. Dr. Mallah serves as an oral board examiner for the College of Surgeons of Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa and is a member of the Association for Academic Global Surgery. His research focuses on surgical training disparities between high-income and low-middle income countries, with publications in leading surgical journals. He is the inventor of GloScope, a low-cost laparoscope designed for resource-limited settings (patent pending). Prior to his medical career, Dr. Mallah worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company in Dubai, where he led healthcare transformation projects across the Middle East, including clinical operations optimization for major health systems, national healthcare workforce strategy development, and international medical college establishment for government clients. Dr. Mallah is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and International College of Surgeons, with medical training from UNC Chapel Hill, residency at Carolinas Medical Center, and fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a sought-after speaker on global surgery topics and has been featured in CNN & NPR interviews and medical publications worldwide.
