Biography

Prof. Dr. med. Florian Kühn is a Professor of Surgery at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich and a senior surgeon at LMU University Hospital. He heads the Colorectal Surgery Unit and has been Director of the Colorectal Cancer Center at the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) Munich since 2021. His clinical and academic work focuses on oncologic gastrointestinal surgery, and minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques. A particular area of his research is colorectal cancer in younger patients and in individuals with hereditary or other high-risk conditions. His research also addresses intestinal barrier function and chronic inflammation. Prof. Kühn completed his specialist training in visceral surgery at Rostock University Medical Center. From 2015 to 2017, he conducted research at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, supported by a fellowship from the German Research Foundation (DFG). He subsequently joined LMU University Hospital in Munich in 2017 and completed his habilitation in 2020. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of several national and international surgical and oncological societies. He has also contributed to the development and revision of German clinical guidelines for colorectal cancer and has held leadership positions within the European Hereditary Tumour Group (EHTG). His work combines clinical excellence, surgical innovation, and translational research with the goal of improving outcomes for patients with colorectal cancer.
