Biography

Dr. Julie Valenzuela is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and an attending surgeon at the Ryder Trauma Center. She is the Medical Director of the Miami-Dade County Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program and Director of Community Engaged Outreach and Research at the William Lehman Injury Research Center. After serving as an active duty U.S. Navy Naval Flight Surgeon and deploying to Afghanistan, Dr. Valenzuela completed her general surgery residency and research fellowship at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, followed by fellowships in Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She has extensive experience in high-acuity trauma care, complex surgical critical care, and global surgery education. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of its Committee on Trauma (COT), where she previously served as a Future Trauma Leader. Dr. Valenzuela is an instructor for ATLS, ASSET, ATOM, TEAM, and Stop the Bleed, and has taught and lectured internationally on trauma resuscitation, operative management, and trauma-informed care.
