Arul S. Thirumoorthi, MD FACS PE is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in the Section of Pediatric Surgery. He is the Director of the MPES Program, Pediatric Trauma Medical Director, and the Director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program. Dr. Thirumoorthi received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan (BS Chemical Engineering) and is a licensed Professional Engineer. He then received his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine. He completed his General Surgery Internship and Residency at New York University. He did an ECMO and research fellowship at Columbia University. Dr. Thirumoorthi completed his Pediatric Surgical Fellowship at Loma Linda University. He completed his Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Michigan. Dr. Thirumoorthi joined the Pediatric Surgery Faculty in 2017. Dr. Thirumoorthi is board certified in General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. Dr. Thirumoorthi is a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics, Pediatric Trauma Society, Society of Critical Care Medicine, SAAS, Midwest Pediatric Surgery Consortium and the Society of Critical Care Program Directors. He is the Pi for the MWPSC Thyroid Research Project. He is the vice chair of the SCCPD Pediatric Surgery Section and co-chair of the APSA Critical Care Education Committee. He is the Young Fellow Association Rep for the Michigan Chapter of ACS. He is a member of the APSA Critical Care, Trauma, Ethics, Program and Audit Committees. Dr. Thirumoorthi’s surgical practice encompasses all areas of general pediatric surgery and pediatric diseases of the neck, chest, and abdomen. His clinical areas of specific interest are pediatric endocrine surgery (thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal) and surgical oncology. Dr. Thirumoorthi also is also interested in pediatric trauma, critical care and ECMO.
