Dr. Cristhian Aspiazu, MD, FACS, is an HPB and transplant surgeon in Guayaquil, Ecuador, with over 15 years of clinical experience. His practice focuses on complex HPB oncology, liver transplantation, and minimally invasive approaches in hepatobiliary surgery. He completed medical school at the University of Guayaquil, followed by general surgery residency at Hospital Luis Vernaza and surgical oncology training at the National Cancer Institute SOLCA. Dr. Aspiazu pursued advanced laparoscopic surgery training in Chile and furthered his specialization through HPB and liver transplant fellowships at Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg, the University of Barcelona, and the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires. He also holds a master’s degree in Health Sciences Research. An engaged member of the international surgical community, Dr. Aspiazu has served as Past President of the AHPBA Ecuador Chapter, Secretary of the ACS Ecuador Chapter, and currently leads the SSAT Ecuador Chapter. He is the National Representative for the ISS/SIC. He has been involved in organizing regional HPB meetings to foster collaboration and surgical education in Latin America. Dr. Aspiazu has authored 26 publications and contributed as a co-author to the AMBROSE study in Annals of Surgery. He has served as a reviewer for the European Journal of Surgical Oncology and held academic teaching roles for over a decade, mentoring surgical residents and fostering clinical research initiatives. His professional interests include expanding access to advanced HPB surgery and liver transplantation in resource-limited settings and contributing to global surgical education and collaboration within the ACS and affiliated societies.
