He serves as Assistant Professor of Metabolic Surgery at Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University, as well as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. Dr. Albaugh has extensive scientific training, earning his PhD in the physiology of metabolism, with emphasis on control of body weight and diabetes. While at Vanderbilt, he also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in surgical metabolism and bariatric surgery supported by the National Institutes of Health. Currently, Dr. Albaugh is faculty at Louisiana State University as an Assistant Professor of Metabolic Surgery at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He is triple board certified in General Surgery, Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, and Obesity Medicine. Dr. Albaugh's research interests include various clinical and preclinical studies working to better understand the gut-brain axis, specifically how food and nutrients are sensed within the gastrointestinal tract and how weight loss treatments (e.g. semaglutide/tirzepatide, bariatric surgery) alter the communication between the gut and the brain. The overall goal of his research program is to better understand the role of the gastrointestinal tract as an endocrine organ and metabolic regulator. Dr. Albaugh's research has been supported by numerous societies and funding agencies, including the American Medical Association, National Institutes of Health, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
