Biography

Dr. Pippa Newell grew up in the Sonoran Desert and still owns the old VW Thing she got for her 19th birthday. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arizona with a degree in Anthropology and Sociology. She lived in Senegal, West Africa, for one year during college, and returned there as a Fulbright Scholar after graduating from college. She returned to her home town of Tucson, AZ for medical school, but then in 2003 ventured to New York for General Surgery training at Mount Sinai. There her surgical mentors Myron Schwartz and Sasan Roayaie introduced her to the dangerous beauty of liver surgery. With their guidance, Pippa then spent two years in a basic science lab studying the molecular biology of liver cancer, working with hepatologists Scott Friedman and Josep Llovet. In 2010, Pippa moved to Portland for Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Fellowship with Paul Hansen, who was later joined by Ron Wolf and Chet Hammill. During her second year of fellowship at Providence, she worked in the tumor immunology lab at the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute, and began work on the projects that she continued part time as a Clinical Research Scientist at the Providence Cancer Center 2012-2020. She worked as a Hepatobiliary Surgeon at the Oregón Clinic 2012-2020. She now works as a general surgeon in a small town in the beautiful Columbia Gorge called Hood River, OR.
