Jacob Moalem, MD FACS

Jacob Moalem, MD, FACS, is Professor of Surgery and Endocrinology at the University of Rochester, Vice Chair for Surgical Quality and Safety, and Section Chief of Endocrine Surgery. He was recruited to the U of R in 2008 to establish a comprehensive Endocrine Surgery program and advance the care of patients with benign and malignant conditions of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. Born in Jerusalem, Dr. Moalem received his BS and MS from the University at Buffalo and his MD from SUNY Downstate. After residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he served as Executive Chief Resident, he completed fellowship training at UCSF. His clinical practice is devoted exclusively to Endocrine Surgery, with expertise in minimally invasive thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal surgery. He performs more than 400 operations annually and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters. In Rochester, Dr. Moalem has held diverse leadership roles in Faculty Affairs, Promotions, and the University Faculty Senate, where he serves as Senator. He also co-chairs UR Medicine's systemwide Perioperative Services Quality and Safety Committee, and is active in community organizations. In the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Moalem has served as Chair of the Resident and Associate Society, Chair of the Young Fellows Association, and as Governor and President of the ACS New York State Chapter. He has been active on numerous other ACS committees and workgroups and currently chairs the ACS' Delegation to the AMA and serves on the ACS Health Policy Advisory Group. He also serves as Governor representing the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, and beginning October 2026, will serve on the Board of Governors Executive Committee and as Pillar Lead for Advocacy and Health Policy. He is a recipient of the AMA Foundation Award. Dr. Moalem is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is licensed in New York, New Jersey, and California.
