Don Selzer, MD FACS

Dr. Don J. Selzer, MD, MS, completed his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Wisconsin and his general surgery residency at Indiana University, followed by a fellowship in bariatric and advanced minimally invasive surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. In 2003, he returned to IU as the department’s first faculty member with fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery. His clinical interests include bariatric and foregut surgery and complex incisional hernia repair. His research has focused on patient selection for bariatric surgery and innovations in hernia repair. Within the IU School of Medicine, Dr. Selzer has served as Director of the Section of Minimally Invasive, Bariatric, and General Surgery, Associate Chair of the Department of Surgery, and Director of the Department of Surgery Skills Lab. He has served as Chief of the Division of General Surgery since 2016 and was appointed Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs in 2026. At IU Health North Hospital, he has held several leadership positions, including Surgery Section Chair, President of the Medical Staff, and Director of Surgical Services. He currently serves as Chief of the Surgery Section at the IU Health Adult Academic Health Center. Dr. Selzer has long been active in health policy and advocacy. He served as Chair of the Advocacy and Health Policy Committee for the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and Chair of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Legislative Committee. Through leadership roles with the AMA RBRVS Update Committee and as Vice Chair of the ACS General Surgery Coding and Reimbursement Committee, he has developed a national reputation in surgical advocacy and reimbursement policy. In October 2025, he was elected to the ACS Board of Regents.
