Biography

Chandra Are is a Surgical Oncologist and holds the title of Jerald L and Carolynn J Varner Professor of Surgical Oncology and Global Health. He is the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education for the College of Medicine and Vice-Chair for Education in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Are has lived, trained and worked in various health care systems across the world. Dr. Are obtained his medical degree from Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, India. Dr. Are completed his general surgery residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore and fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. More recently, Dr. Are obtained his Executive MBA degree from University of Omaha. Dr. Are’s clinical area of expertise focuses on hepatopancreatobiliary surgery. His interests extend across a wide spectrum from education, research, simulation and global health He is the recipient of multiple awards including induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) Honor Medical Society from The Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award (OTICA) from the University of Nebraska and the Most Valuable Program (MVP) Director award. Dr. Are is extensively involved in research with multiple publications and presentations. He initiated and serves as the Director of two Research Collaborative and is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal, Graduate Medical Education Research Journal (GMERJ). Dr. Are has been integrally involved in the surgical global outreach efforts of the Society of Surgical Oncology and serves as the Chair of the International Outreach Committee and Founding Director of The Global Forum of Cancer Surgeons. Dr. Are has also been appointed as the Lead Commissioner for The Lancet Oncology Commission on Global Cancer Surgery- Part II. Through these efforts, he plays a vital role on the global stage to address disparities in surgical care for cancer patients.
