Biography

Dr. Perlstein is currently the Chair of the Department of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at Sutter Roseville Medical Center and Surgery Residency Program Director. He also serves as the medical director of trauma services, medical director of the trauma-neuro ICU, and teaching faculty for medical students from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and California Northstate College of Medicine. Dr. Perlstein’s areas of expertise are trauma surgery, surgical critical-care, and acute care surgery. Jon’s career started in the United States Air Force where he trained and served as a trauma surgeon. Dr. Perlstein has had extensive combat surgical experience highlighted by his stint as Chief of Trauma Surgery at Balad Air Base, Iraq. At Travis AFB, Jon served the role of medical director of trauma and surgical critical-care and surgery residency program director for 8 years. Dr. Perlstein continues to serve in the Air National Guard as a Commander of the 152nd Medical Group in Reno, NV. Surgical Education has always been a passion of Dr. Perlstein and while surgical residency program director at David Grant USAF Medical Center, he had a graduation rate of greater than 90% and all of the non-graduates of surgery finished training in another specialty. During Jon’s tenure as faculty, he was named surgical educator of the year and thoroughly enjoyed working with the residents. In fact, he continues to teach locally and nationally with University and American College of Surgeons affiliations. Most recently, Dr. Perlstein focuses on his role as the Surgery Residency Program Director at Sutter Health/Sutter Roseville Medical Center GME program. Excited by this new endeavor, he cherishes the opportunity to help Sutter Health move into the arena of medical specialty training. With 4 years of training at the military medical school, 14 years of military experience, and 12 years of Chairmanship, Dr. Perlstein cherishes his leadership duties and looks forward to continuing to lead and grow the Trauma Center at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Jon also serves in regional and national leadership positions pertaining to the care of the injured patient. Dr. Perlstein serves as the Chairman of the Sierra-Sacramento Valley EMS Agency Trauma Quality Improvement Committee, Chair of the Northern California ACS Committee on Trauma, and an American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma Verification Reviewer. These leadership roles enable him to help move trauma and surgical care forward to improve patient care globally. In Addition, the added insight Jon obtains from these collaborative responsibilities enables him to bring back to Sutter Roseville Medical Center novel ideas to improve quality of care. On a personal note, Dr. Perlstein is married to his high school sweetheart, Jamie and has three children, Ashley, Jake, and Zack. Jon and Jamie enjoy traveling, spending time with family, golfing, and visiting with their grandchildren, Jesse and Jade.
