Biography

Wake Forest Dept. of Urology -- A National Leader in Urologic Care Currently ranked as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” for urologic care by U.S.News & World Report, the Department of Urology is part of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Our 11-physician practice offers both general and specialty care in the following areas: * Pediatric urology, with the largest practice between Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. Three pediatric urologists treat disorders of the kidney, ureter, bladder, genitalia and specific problems such as hernias and voiding dysfunction. * Incontinence and voiding dysfunction. Our Continence Center, one of the nation’s leading centers for treating adult and pediatric urinary incontinence, is devoted to finding the least invasive and most effective treatment for each patient. With an initial focus on non-invasive approaches, treatment options also include botulinum toxin, Interstim®, and the artificial sphincter. We are one of a few in the state to offer video-urodynamics to determine the exact cause of incontinence so the treatment can be tailored to the patient. * Infertility and sexual dysfunction. Offering all treatment options, including penile implants. * Kidney stones. Our specialists helped write the treatment guidelines that are used by urologists nationwide. Our program offers not only the latest treatments, but metabolic evaluations to identity the cause of recurrent stones. * Oncology. Our oncology team treats cancers of the prostate, bladder, kidneys, adrenal gland and testes and works as a team with specialists in medical oncology, radiation oncology and interventional radiology from Wake Forest Baptist’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, to provide individualized treatment plans for optimal outcomes. We offer the complete range of surgical options, including laparoscopy and laser surgery, microsurgery and robotic surgery. Our director of Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery is a pioneer in the field and helped develop protocols used by surgeons nationwide. Our physicians offer this option not only for prostate cancer, but for almost all urologic abdominal and pelvic surgical conditions. Our Locations Our main clinical office is at 140 Charlois Blvd. in Winston-Salem. Located in a freestanding building just minutes from the Medical Center, the facility is designed for patient convenience and one-stop care. There is easy parking, several entrances for easy access and separate waiting areas for pediatric and adult patients. On-site laboratory and radiology services allow patients to complete testing during a single visit. The urology imaging center offers CT scans, ultrasound, flat X-rays and fluoroscopy. Five procedure rooms, equipped with digital endoscopy equipment, allow for minor outpatient procedures. In addition to the Charlois Blvd. location, we have seven satellite clinics in convenient locations throughout the Triad and beyond. Our Role as Clinical Investigators Our doctors are also clinical investigators who work to identify the treatments of tomorrow. Because they are at the forefront of discovery, they can offer patients the newest treatments and technology, often before they are widely available. Our department has 22 clinical studies underway and has a history of bringing urologic advances to patients. For example, our physicians and scientists were the first in the world to engineer a bladder in the laboratory that has been successful implanted in patients. Today, this technology is being developed for adults with bladder cancer and spinal cord injuries. In the area of kidney stones, we have the distinction of being ranked #1 in the country in terms of NIH funding for stone research. As part of only a small number of National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, investigators currently have over 20 federally funded grants in the area of urologic cancver. In addition, we’re working with the Institute of Regenerative Medicine on projects such as uncovering the genetic aspects of stress incontinence, understanding the mechanisms of bladder regeneration, and nerve regeneration for prostate cancer patients.
