Biography

Dr. Stephen Kraus is Professor and Chair of the Department of Urology at UT Health San Antonio, where he also serves as Chief of the Division of Female Urology, Neurourology & Voiding Dysfunction. He is the Medical Director of the South Texas Pelvic Floor Center and Urodynamics Laboratory & served as Head of Urology for the Spinal Cord Injury Unit at the Audie Murphy VA Hospital. He previously served as Chief Medical Officer for Inpatient Services at UT Health Physicians. In addition to general urology, Dr. Kraus specializes in female urology, incontinence, neurogenic bladder & complex voiding dysfunction. His expertise includes the evaluation & management of overactive bladder, stress and urge urinary incontinence, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and neurogenic bladder disorders associated with spinal cord injury, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, prostate cancer & multiple sclerosis. Dr. Kraus performs all surgical interventions for urinary incontinence and voiding dysfunction, including artificial urinary sphincters, penile prostheses, urethral bulking injections, midurethral & fascial slings, and bladder botulinum toxin injections. He also performs neuromodulation procedures such as InterStim, Axonics, and tibial nerve stimulation. His research interests focus on urodynamics, bladder function and incontinence. He has served as PI for many large clinical trials including several NIH-sponsored study on urinary incontinence. Dr. Kraus has held national leadership roles including serving on the Board of Directors for the Society for Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction. He has also served on multiple American Urological Association (AUA) Guideline Panels, including Urodynamics and Female SUI and currently serves as Vice-Chair of the AUA Guidelines Panel for Neurogenic Bladder. Dr. Kraus was selected to serve on the AUA Practice Guidelines Committee (PGC), which oversees & directs the development of all AUA clinical guidelines.
