Dr. Michel B. Aboutanos, MD, MPH, FACS, NOTW, is the Fletcher Emory Ammons Distinguished Professor in Surgery, and chief of VCU level 1 Trauma center , and chair the Division of Acute Care Surgical Services Surgery at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia, USA. He is the director of VCU’s Injury & Violence Prevention Program (IVPP). Dr. Aboutanos completed his general surgery training at MCV/VCU, and his trauma & critical care training at the University of Maryland’s R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Maryland USA. He additionally completed a residency in Preventive Medicine at Johns Hopkins University where he obtained his Masters in Public Health with emphasis on Injury and Violence control. He served for the Pan American Health Organizations (PAHO/WHO) on violence surveillance systems in the regions of the Americas. He was appointed by the Virginia Governor to serve on the EMS advisory board as Chair of the Va Trauma Systems committee. He also serves as the Chair of Virginia Chapter of the ACS Committee on Trauma. Dr. Aboutanos is a member of multiple regional, national and international organizations and societies. He previously served as president of the Panamerican Trauma Society.
