Dr Sheppard is Professor and Vice Chairman for Clinical Operations and Quality at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) and is the William E. Colson Chair for Pancreatic Disease Research. Dr Sheppard has been on staff at OHSU since 1991. He cares for patients with foregut and pancreatico-hepatobilairy surgical disease. His focus encompasses benign and malignant disease of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine,spleen, the adrenal gland, gallbladder, bile duct, liver and pancreas. Whenever possible Dr Sheppard uses minimally invasive surgical techniques for the care of his patients. Dr Sheppard is committed to excellence in care and providing high quality and safe surgical care. He co-chairs the Department of Surgery Quality of Care group and has been the Chair of the Quality Executive Council for OHSU. He is the past chair of the Oregon National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Consortium and continues to represent OHSU within this consortium. He alos sits on the Oregon Patient Safety Commission and The Oregon Health Fund Subcommittee for Quality. Dr Sheppard's research commitment is to develop new methods to detect pancreatic cancer earlier and to develop new therapeutics to treat pancreatic cancer. He is the Director of the Pancreatic Cancer program @OHSU, Clinical Co-director of the Brenden-Colson Center for Pancreatic Care and Principal Investigator for the Oregon Pancreas Tumor Registry which helps screen patients at high risk for developing pancreatic cancer. In addition Dr Sheppard is active in research to improve the use of minimally invasive surgery for surgical care and is the Fellowship Director for the advanced GI and minimally invasive surgical training program.
