I was a Regent of the College from 2009-2018 and served as the vice Chairman of the Board of Regents. My specialization in Surgery is pediatric surgery which focuses on the pediatric age group (premature infants to 21 years old). I have over 40 years of experience and special clinical interests in neonatal surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, and vascular problems in children. I have also been performing renal transplants in children throughout my career. My research interests involve gastrointestinal problems such as intestinal failure (short bowel syndrome), inflammatory bowel disease and the role of growth factors to enhance intestinal growth and absorption to treat intestinal failure. Most recently, I have been working at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine as the principle investigator on two projects: 1) tissue engineering small intestine as a treatment for intestinal failure in infants and children, and 2) the use of placental stem cells in the treatment of neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis. I am an emeritus director of the American Board of Surgery and Chairman of the Pediatric Surgery Board and served on the Surgery Residency Review Committee of the ACGME. In addition to being a Regent of College, I served on numerous committees of the American College of Surgeons. I have been involved in advocacy and health policy for over 25 years and am a past Chair of the Health Policy and Advocacy Group (HPAG). I am a past president of the American Pediatric Surgical Association and the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons.
