The Dayton Children's Hospital Department of Pediatric Surgery is devoted to the management of surgical problems in infants, children and adolescents. Members of this Department are specially certified by the American Board of Surgery to treat surgical disorders of childhood including gastrointestinal, thoracic, and endocrine conditions, congenital (newborn) malformations and neoplasms (tumors). Pediatric surgery is not limited to one anatomic area of the body, such as the thorax or abdomen, but encompasses diseases that are unique to children or require special expertise. These diseases include but are not limited to: cystic hygromas and tumors of the head and neck; chest wall deformities(pectus); malformations and tumors of the lung and mediastinum; soft tissue tumors; esophageal atresia and congenital anomalies of the intestine; biliary atresia and hepatobiliary disorders; abdominal masses and tumors such as Wilms' tumor and neuroblastoma; pediatric colorectal diseases, such as imperforate anus, Hirschsprung's disease and inflammatory bowel disease; hernias of the inguinal area (groin) and abdominal wall; endocrine surgery (thyroid and adrenal glands), urologic problems such as undescended testes and circumcision; skin lesions; breast masses and gynecomastia; gastroesophageal reflux and complex intestinal surgical problems. Laparoscopic, endoscopic and thoracoscopic surgical techniques are routinely utilized.
