American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

2009 Domestic Volunteer Award: Douglas P. Grey and William P. Schecter

Douglas P. Grey, MD, FACS, and William P. Schecter, MD, FACS, of San Francisco, CA, founders of the non-profit organization Operation Access, were jointly awarded the 2009 Surgical Volunteerism Award for their domestic outreach efforts. Inspired to address challenges the underserved faced in their own community when requiring surgical care, Drs. Schecter and Grey co-founded Operation Access in 1993. This organization mobilizes medical volunteers, referring community clinics, and hospitals to provide donated outpatient surgeries and specialty care to the uninsured and underinsured. Their program has proven effective both clinically and financially, and provides a positive impact on the health, employability, and quality of life for thousands of Californians. It is a model for surgical care delivery to the underserved throughout the U.S.
