The ACS Dissemination Committee presented a Virtual Grand Rounds session on June 26 highlighting differences in surgical program bootcamps in the post-COVID era.
The session featured three different perspectives on what learners and faculty needed to know as compared with years prior to COVID. Jacklyn Engelbart, MD, general surgery resident at the University of Iowa Health Care, Iowa City, shared information about a resident summer school program, including training on communication, teaching medical students, and mental health.
Ms. Emma Vick, MA, Standardized Patient (SP) Trainer at Oregon Health & Sciences University OHSU Simulation in Portland, discussed the use of SPs in training and how interactions varied by having in-person versus virtual encounters.
Robert M. Rush, Jr., MD, FACS, medical director of trauma and acute care surgery service at PeaceHealth St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Bellingham, Washington, reminded us that not only were resident and medical student educational programs modified during the pandemic, but also new fellows and faculty may have experienced disruptions, as well.
Finally, Julie A. Hartman, DC, MS, CHSE, operations director at the University of Iowa Health Care Center for Procedural Skills and Simulation moderated a panel discussion with all speakers providing questions from the audience regarding their experiences and thoughts for the future.
If you were unable to attend this session live, please review the recording and watch for the next Virtual Grand Rounds session.
