Making sure surgical patients have the best possible outcomes is the goal of every surgeon, especially for Fellows of the College. However, ensuring exceptional care is becoming more and more challenging as hospitals face a variety of pressures. The ACS Power of Quality campaign aims to assist surgeons in improving surgical quality by expanding the reach of its Quality Programs to more hospitals.
“Surgeons face so many challenges today as they do the hard work of quality improvement in their hospitals. The College wants to provide support through our campaign to help surgeons more effectively lead these efforts,” said Clifford Y. Ko, MD, MS, MSHS, FACS. “This special session will provide surgeons with tremendous insights from some great surgical leaders who have implemented a variety of ACS Quality Programs and seen real improvement for patients. They will talk about the challenges they have faced and how they navigate quality improvement in a time of constrained resources.”
Joining Dr. Ko for the special panel discussion today at 11:30 am in Room 104ABC, will be James Fleshman, MD, FACS, FASCRS, chairman of the Department of Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas; Julie A. Freischlag, MD, FACS, chief executive officer of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and Matthew P. Schiralli, MD, FACS, vice president of medical staff at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital in New York.
The Power of Quality campaign also is assisting surgeons and hospitals in fostering more conversations about surgical quality in their communities. The ACS is providing hospitals with communications and marketing materials to tout their status as Surgical Quality Partners if they participate in at least one of 13 programs.
“We have developed great resources to help surgeon leaders and their hospitals talk about their commitment to surgical quality and inspire confidence in the care they deliver,” said Dr. Ko. “I’m confident that as we continue to raise awareness about the importance of quality, it will help surgeons and hospitals more deeply engage in this essential work and help patients know better where to go when they need care.”
The Panel Session will be made available for on-demand viewing shortly after the live presentation.
