Five Practice-Changing Studies Will Take Center Stage in Power-Packed Session

October 24, 2023

Are you overwhelmed by the amount of reading material necessary to stay current on innovative research?

Today’s Scientific Forum presentation, Seminal Works in Surgery, fast-tracks some key findings from the last year by featuring the authors of five highly impactful papers. The interactive session is from 9:45 am to 11:15 am, in Room 252AB.

“These publications are practice-changing and have advanced the understanding of complex disease management,” said session moderator Jacqueline S. Jeruss, MD, PhD, FACS. “This novel session provides an opportunity to discuss five papers in detail with input from subject matter experts and study authors. We hope this session format will help to facilitate high-level and thoughtful discussion to enhance the integration of practice-changing treatment recommendations into clinical practice.”

Each presentation will feature a panel discussion with the authors, offering additional perspectives on their research and addressing attendees’ questions.

The five articles focus on:

  • Safety of attempting pregnancy after breast cancer
  • Use of retatrutide for obesity
  • Preoperative treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer
  • Anticoagulation implementation for thromboprophylaxis after fracture
  • Surgery versus endovascular therapy for chronic limb-threatening ischemia

“These articles have relevance not only for specialty surgeons but also for our general surgical community,” said Ali Tavakkoli, MD, FACS, session co-moderator. “The format allows the audience to hear the significance of the study from an expert, followed by a presentation by one for the manuscript’s authors who will highlight challenges and unique aspects of the study.”

Dr. Jeruss noted that the topics vary widely and are critically important to the care of surgical patients. “The common theme across these papers is the use of clinical trials and translational research to help facilitate progress in health care optimization.”

The moderators of the Seminal Works in Surgery session, now in its second year, encourage attendees to take advantage of this didactic opportunity as a pathway for translating these findings into the clinical setting.
