SSO Presents Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Heidi Nelson

Former ACS Cancer Programs Medical Director Heidi Nelson, MD, FACS, is the recipient of the Society of Surgical Oncology’s (SSO) 2025 Charles M. Balch, MD, Distinguished Service Award. The SSO award is presented to individuals for outstanding contributions to surgical oncology through service to SSO, research, or enhancing clinical care or health policy. Dr. Nelson is Emeritus Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society Cancer Facts & Figures 2023, there will be an estimated 288,300 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in the US and 34,700 men will die from the disease this year.
