In August, the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Division of Education launched the inaugural edition of SESAP 17 Advanced, the first edition of the Surgical Education and Self-Assessment Program (SESAP®) dedicated to in-depth content addressing complex and evolving topics. SESAP is a premier educational resource for practicing surgeons. In SESAP 17 Advanced, five modules consisting of 243 newly constructed, case-based, multiple-choice questions cover five content areas—abdomen and alimentary tract, breast, endocrine, surgical critical care, and trauma.
“The SESAP 17 Advanced modules add a new dimension to SESAP. We believe the information will be helpful to all general surgeons, but especially those surgeons who find themselves involved with specific patient problems in these areas,” according to John A. Weigelt, MD, DVM, FACS, SESAP 17 Advanced Program Director.
Filling a gap in specialized training material
SESAP 17 Advanced modules are available in an online format and have corresponding prerequisite categories in SESAP 17; however, the advanced modules explore topics in greater depth and address issues that may have been beyond the scope of the more general SESAP 17 content. For example, “The questions in the breast module discuss more unusual conditions, probe deeper into newer science, and touch on controversies in breast disease care. They also provide more in-depth discussion and additional references,” John T. Vetto, MD, FACS, Breast Module Committee Lead, said.
SESAP 17 Advanced was developed at the urging of past SESAP subscribers, who had been requesting program material covering topics they face every day in their specialized practices. According to Lena M. Napolitano, MD, FACS, FCCP, MCCM, Surgical Critical Care Module Committee Lead, “There are very few educational programs that focus on surgical critical care. This excellent program is of great value to surgeons, as it provides SESAP questions and commentary at an advanced knowledge level for surgical intensivists.”

The program employs the latest web-based tools, which facilitate self-directed learning to further enhance the educational and clinical relevance of the material. Learners can highlight text and use the My Advanced Library feature to create and customize folders with notes and bookmarked material for easy future reference. Targeted search functionality, shared with the SESAP 17 program, offers filters and advanced strategies to provide focused, relevant results and record past searches. For those individuals who want additional practice, modules can be reset and completed multiple times to aid in learning and retention. Finally, the program includes peer comparisons that display comparative metrics in real time.
This inaugural edition of SESAP 17 Advanced continues the tradition of offering unsurpassed quality educational content and was developed across two years by five committees, with 21 practicing surgeon authors representing a range of clinical and academic environments, surgical specialties, and practices from every region of the U.S. Participants can earn up to 61 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
