Chapter news

ACS domestic and international chapter meetings, events, and award presentations are summarized.

Domestic and international chapters of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) met in the last several months to host a variety of activities, including annual meetings, networking events, mock orals, and Surgical Jeopardy. At the February Board of Regents meeting, the Ontario Chapter was approved and became the third chapter in Canada and the 115th overall.

Florida Chapters

All-Florida Reception, October 26, Clinical Congress. A record 176 surgeons and trainees gathered at the event, sponsored by all three ACS chapters in Florida and 10 Florida institutions (Cleveland Clinic Florida, Florida State University, Florida Atlantic University, Brandon Regional Hospital General Surgery Residency, Mayo Clinic, Ocala Regional Hospital General Surgery Residency, University of Florida, University of Florida–Jacksonville, University of Miami, and University of South Florida).

Louisiana Chapter

Annual Meeting, January 18–20, New Orleans. Highlights from the meeting included a resident mock oral session; a paper competition; Surgical Jeopardy; an update from Valerie W. Rusch, MD, FACS, 2019–2020 ACS President; and the presentation of the LA-ACS Charles Lester Black Humanitarian Award. Quyen D. Chu, MD, FACS, President, Louisiana Chapter, received the award, which recognizes a chapter member who has dedicated a significant amount of time to humanitarian medical outreach both locally and abroad.

Southern California Chapter

Annual Scientific Meeting, January 10–12, Santa Barbara. More than 400 participants attended the two-and-a-half-day meeting that included abstract presentations in plenary and mini podium sessions; eight specialty sessions; and Surgical Jeopardy, for which Loma Linda University took home the prize.

Germany Chapter members

Germany Chapter

The Germany Chapter will run an Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET) course in conjunction with the German Annual Congress in April 2021 in Munich. The main organizers, Ernst Klar, MD, FACS, Germany Chapter Governor (left), and John H. Armstrong, MD, FACS, Florida Chapter President and ACS Committee on Trauma member, observed the ASSET course at the University of California San Francisco Orthopedic Trauma Institute at the ACS Clinical Congress 2019.
