The modern medical environment is challenging, complex, and unpredictable. As the demands on leaders continue to escalate, the need for effective leadership has never been greater. To meet this need, the ACS offers the Surgeons as Leaders: From Operating Room to Boardroom course, which is intended for surgeons in any practice setting who currently serve in leadership roles or aspire to do so. It is specifically tailored to practicing surgeons with substantial surgical experience (more than 6 years).
The next ACS Surgeons as Leaders course will take place March 21–24, 2027, in Durham, North Carolina, and applications are now being accepted.
Guided by nationally renowned surgeon leaders, the course offers a highly interactive learning experience that blends expert-led lectures, small group breakouts, panel discussions, and more. Features of the course include individual meetings with expert faculty for personalized guidance, special sessions tailored to address issues faced by leaders in community practice and in academic practice, and sessions on diversity, finance, emotional intelligence, building teams, and more.
The purpose of this course is to provide surgeons with an understanding of leadership at all levels of an organization and the skills that are essential for effective leadership.
Experienced surgeon leaders head the course, including several ACS executives, Officers, and Regents.
