ACS Leads National Conversation on E-Bike Safety

As electric bicycle (e-bike) use continues to grow, the ACS has emerged as a leading voice calling for stronger measures to prevent injuries and improve e-bike safety.

ACS engagement on the issue began with a July 2024 ACS Bulletin article examining e-bikes as an emerging public health hazard. In June 2025, the ACS Board of Regents approved a formal statement developed by the Committee on Trauma outlining recommendations for e-bike safety and injury prevention. A June 2026 follow-up Bulletin article, “Gaps in E-Bike Regulation Heighten Risks for Young Riders,” further highlighted regulatory shortcomings and the risks facing children and adolescents.

These efforts have positioned the ACS and its Fellows as a trusted source for journalists covering e-bike injuries and policy. Since January 1, the ACS has been mentioned in 479 online articles and 120 broadcast segments related to e-bikes. Following the June 2026 Bulletin article alone, the ACS appeared in 94 online stories and 70 broadcasts, including coverage in USA Today, Axios Chicago, CBS Denver, and the Des Moines Register.

ACS members also are advancing the issue through direct advocacy. Timothy Browder, MD, FACS, testified in support of California Assembly Bill 2346, an e-bike safety measure. John Maa, MD, FACS, a co-author of the Bulletin articles, has advocated for stronger federal and local regulations through testimony, op-eds, and numerous media interviews.

Together, these research, communications, media outreach, and advocacy efforts have helped establish the ACS as a national leader in promoting safer e-bike use.
