Decreased Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Reimbursement, Increased Malpractice Costs Challenge Surgeons

In the US, there has been an overall increase in cost of malpractice insurance for surgeons and decrease in federal reimbursement for surgical work—a challenging financial situation for all domestic surgeons, but also an inconsistent one based on practice location. Listen to Natasha A. Sioda, MD, briefly summarize her recent Journal of the American College of Surgeons article, which found significant variation in Medicare-based surgeon compensation relative to malpractice insurance costs across the US for laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
