The ACS Women in Surgery Committee (WiSC) has announced the call for nominations for the annual Dr. Mary Edwards Walker Inspiring Women in Surgery Award, to be presented at Clinical Congress 2026 in Washington, DC.
The award will recognize an individual's significant contributions to the advancement of women in the field of surgery and honors the accomplishments of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, the first woman surgeon to serve in the US Army and the only woman to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest US armed forces decoration for valor.
All nominations must be submitted online no later than 12:00 pm Central on Friday, May 1. Visit the award webpage for more information on award eligibility.
The 2025 awardee was Anna Marie Ledgerwood, MD, FACS, a general and trauma surgeon in Detroit, Michigan who built a reputation for mentoring and advising students and junior colleagues in surgery in her 40+ year tenure as a full professor. She also helped position the ACS Committee on Trauma’s Verification, Review, and Consultation Program as a driving force in quality improvement for trauma centers and other hospitals.
