Lung cancer has the highest mortality of any cancer in the US and is one of the deadliest worldwide. Despite these sobering statistics, screening has historically lagged other disease types.

Efforts to improve lung cancer detection and survival have improved significantly in recent years, thanks in part to the efforts of world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon Douglas E. Wood, MD, FACS, FRCSEd, who has dedicated much of his career to saving the lives of lung cancer patients both in the OR and through his tireless efforts to develop evidence-based lung cancer screening guidelines and for lung cancer screening coverage.

Dr. Wood, who is Vice-Chair of the ACS Board of Regents and the Henry N. Harkins Professor and Chair of the University of Washington (UW) Department of Surgery in Seattle, recently delivered the prestigious UW University Faculty Lecture on his decades-long work in this area.
