Is your current education preparing patients well for their surgery? The ACS Patient Education Brochure series supports informed consent and risk-reduction strategies that have been highly valued by patients.

Each brochure outlines the corresponding procedure, diagnoses/reasons to have the procedure, and reviews risks and benefits. The most common risks per the ACS Risk Calculator are reviewed, along with strategies for complication prevention.

The Patient Education Brochure series covers the following common topics and procedures in the noted languages:

  • Appendectomy (English, Spanish)
  • Cholecystectomy (English, Spanish)
  • Colectomy (English, Spanish)
  • Colonoscopy (English, Spanish)
  • Inguinal/Femoral Hernia – Adult (English, Spanish)
  • Inguinal Hernia – Pediatric
  • Umbilical Hernia – Adult (English, Spanish)
  • Umbilical Hernia – Pediatric
  • Ventral Hernia (English, Spanish)
  • Medication and Surgery
  • Safe and Effective Pain Control after Surgery (Adult)
  • Safe and Effective Pain Control after Surgery (Pediatric)
  • Quit Smoking before Your Operation (English)

Of patients using the brochures, nearly all have reported that they felt the brochures were more helpful than materials they received in the past, better prepared to participate in their care, and more confident talking with their surgeon.

Review the online brochures or purchase brochure packs for your practice in the ACS Store. Member pricing is available. View additional ACS Patient Education resources, including Home Skills Kits and courses for professionals and patients.
