Pairing experienced ACS leaders with young surgeon members.
The Young Fellows Association (YFA) sponsors mentoring programs for young surgeons. These programs support the College's overall goal to provide career and skill-building educational opportunities for our members. The YFA Mentor Programs offer both young and experienced surgeons valuable opportunities for engagement and development.
The Young Fellows Association (YFA) of the ACS first piloted the annual mentorship program in 2012. Since then, the number of participants has more than doubled from 50 in 2013 to over 100 in 2024. In 2018, the program moved from a mentor-mentee pair format to a mentorship triad model. Each year, the program connects ACS members at three different career stages to support their mutual development over a 10-month process.
Fellows of the ACS with 10 or more years of experience practicing provide valuable mentorship to surgeons earlier in their career, supporting the development of future leaders.
Fellows with less experience benefit from the mentorship of a colleague further ahead in their career and develop their own mentorship skills with an early-career mentee.
Surgeons who completed training and are in the early years of practice receive help clarifying career goals and support in charting a course of action.
