SESAP for Residents

Resident Features

The Surgical Education and Self-Assessment Program, SESAP®, is a premier educational resource promoting excellence and expertise in surgical practice. The program is delivered online via a web-based program and optimized for use on mobile devices with the same content and features as on the desktop web version.

SESAP 19 consists of 640 multiple-choice, case-based questions that have been newly developed by 57 practicing surgeon authors, who are ACS Fellows. SESAP 19 Advanced offers 329 additional questions exploring more complex and nuanced topics.

Questions include evidence-based explanations for each answer option, hundreds of embedded media, thousands of references, and links to PubMed abstracts and related tools.

SESAP is designed for residents to personalize and reinforce learning. Popular features allow residents to:

  • Build custom quizzes across modules or across questions initially answered incorrectly
  • Create flashcards linked to each question and study 500 existing cards
  • Repeat modules and complete unlimited quizzes
  • Highlight and bookmark items for further study
  • Select topic areas and receive weekly or bi-weekly links to questions
  • Compare answers and scores with peers
  • Send Progress Reports directly to program directors

Resident packages contain the same content as those for practicing surgeons. However, residents are not eligible to earn CME credit with SESAP 19 and SESAP 19 Advanced.

SESAP 19 and SESAP 19 Advanced will be available online for study through November 10, 2028.

Individual Orders

If paying individually, Resident members may purchase SESAP 19 and SESAP 19 Advanced using the secure server at the online ACS store. To order, Resident members must log into their active ACS profiles on the ACS website and Order Online. Resident pricing for all packages will be displayed in active Resident profiles.

Residency Program Orders

Residency program directors or administrators may order on behalf of residents.

Please note that SESAP is designed and licensed for individual use only. Institutions may not purchase SESAP for shared use, and multiple individuals may not use the same account.

First, please ensure that every resident is enrolled as a resident member of the ACS so that discounted pricing may be applied to each order. Visit the Resident Member page to complete membership applications, process a group enrollment, or download reinstatement forms.

Then, please complete the SESAP Group Order Interest Form with the following:

  • Name of each resident
  • ACS member ID (if known)
  • Email address of each resident
  • SESAP 19 and SESAP 19 Advanced package selection

SESAP staff will review your submission, contact you for any additional information needed, and create a pro forma invoice for the group order. A copy of this pro forma invoice must be submitted for payment processing, and all orders must be pre-paid. Residents will receive confirmation of their order and login instructions by email after orders are processed.

If you have questions, review the SESAP FAQs or contact SESAP staff at 312-202-5419 or sesap@facs.org
