Program Highlights

The Mastery in General Surgery Senior Associate and Junior Associate will build a year-long curriculum together. The UMN General Surgery Program offers several program themes depending on the needs of the Junior Associate. The Associate may choose to focus on Global Surgery, surgeon leadership development, Surgical Education, or development as a surgeon scientist. The candidate may also concentrate on growth in surgical skills and patient care. Many types of rotations across the breadth of General Surgery competencies are available, including bread-and-butter general surgery, or surgical specialties such as Pediatric surgery or Vascular surgery. There are also numerous opportunities to include advanced surgical techniques such as robotics, endoscopy or intravascular procedural skills.

After the initial two-week period of close observation by the Program Chief, the Junior Associate will act as a junior partner on desired rotations. Additional rotations will be available depending on the assessment, skill level, and future job/practice desires.

Program Description

The intake evaluation will inform additional areas of focus and experience will be provided in outpatient, inpatient, or emergency room evaluation in addition to operative experience provided in a variety of disciplines.

The program will include three phases:

Phase 1 will be an introductory phase of three months. Working closely with faculty, this phase will assess the medical knowledge, patient care, and overall skill set of the Junior Associate.

Phase 2, a 26-week supervised period, will provide progressive independence to allow assessment of independent decision making and judgment. Competency in endoscopy, minimally invasive surgery, breast surgery, surgical oncology, GI surgery, endocrine surgery, and emergency surgery will be evaluated, along with any additional skills the Junior Associate has identified in their individualized learning plan. Independent practice (with daily communication with staff) or further concentration in an area of interest will be offered.

Phase 3, the final 3-6 months, the Junior Associate will be expected to gain progressive independence with supervision available as needed. The Junior Associate will have an independent clinic experience, operate independently, and care for the patients independent of the residents or the faculty.

A weekly review of cases, especially those cases with morbidity or mortality, is the standard for all UMN Department of Surgery practices along with a preoperative conference that includes a review of all upcoming cases for the week.

Information and support will be provided regarding billing, medical liability, and interviews and contract negotiations. The Junior Associate will be expected to carry out at least one quality improvement project during their Mastery in General Surgery Program year. In addition, Associates preparing for boards will have arrangements that would work with their schedule for board review and teaching sessions. The Junior Associate will have an academic title of Instructor of Surgery and be involved with supervising General Surgery residents.

The Final Assessment of the Junior Associate will include a compilation of the full year’s evaluations and an opportunity for the Junior Associate to share their experience in the program.

Currently, the UMN General Surgery Program does not sponsor visas.
