AEI Spotlight

University of California San Diego Center for the Future of Surgery

February 17, 2026

Congratulations to the University of California San Diego Center for the Future of Surgery (CFS) for earning ACS-AEI Comprehensive Accreditation, highlighting its commitment to excellence in simulation-based surgical education and training. Take a moment to learn more about this center and explore how your goals and initiatives may align.

Tell us about your center.

Since its inception in 2011, the Center for the Future of Surgery (CFS) at the University of California (UC) San Diego School of Medicine has become a global leader in advancing procedural techniques through investigation, testing, simulation, and education. As one of the world’s most comprehensive surgical training facilities, we support a diverse community of learners and industry partners by providing access to the latest technological advancements. Our mission is to bridge the gap between innovation and the operating room, ensuring that every professional is equipped to enhance the quality of care and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

What is your center's specialty or strength(s)?

Our primary strengths are world-class training and education, cutting-edge technology and high-fidelity simulation, and a collaborative interdisciplinary environment. We provide best-in-class training and education from our expert faculty. We upgrade and maintain cutting-edge technology that is used in operating rooms and procedural suites across the world; this allows us to create the highest of fidelity simulations so our training environment can be translated directly to one's home institution. Collaboration across all phases of care is further amplified by our affiliation with UC San Diego Health, which provides the institutional credibility and a network necessary to remain at the forefront of surgical education.

What areas (if any) are you looking to expand or improve?

Our vision for the future is to scale our physical and academic capacity to match the rapid pace of surgical innovation, especially in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence. We aim to expand our facility to house emerging robotic technologies and create dedicated spaces for high-volume, collaborative learning. Alongside this physical growth, we hope to broaden our curriculum to encompass new surgical and procedural specialties and to expand the breadth of research and innovation.

What do you hope to gain from being an AEI?

We hope to gain recognition as a trusted provider of high-quality education and training. Becoming an AEI strengthens our credibility, demonstrates our commitment to academic excellence and regulatory compliance, and assures students, partners, and stakeholders of the quality and integrity of our programs. AEI status also enables us to attract a more diverse student population and build stronger partnerships with industry and other educational institutions. Additionally, the accreditation process will help us continuously improve our curriculum, governance, and student support systems, ensuring that our programs remain relevant, effective, and aligned with best practices. Ultimately, we see AEI accreditation as a pathway to delivering greater educational impact, improving learner outcomes, and contributing meaningfully to skills development and lifelong learning.
