Promotion in Place (PIP) Pilot

The ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators Grand Rounds Series is pleased to present this virtual panel discussion with Dr. Mary Ellen Goldhamer, Dr. Ronald Hirschl, and Dr. Brenessa Lindeman, moderated by Dr. Mohsen Shabahang, with welcoming remarks by Dr. Ajit K. Sachdeva. During this session, our panelists will discuss this national initiative designed to enhance autonomy in residency training and strengthen readiness for independent practice.

Mary Ellen J. Goldhamer, MD, MPH

Mary Ellen J. Goldhamer, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Massachusetts General Hospital and serves as core faculty in the HMS Clinical Skills Assessment Program. She spent nearly a decade in the Mass General Brigham (MGB) Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME) providing guidance to over 250+ residency and fellowship programs in the areas of program development, trainee assessment, and program evaluation, contributing to the development of the educational curriculum for 49 new GME programs across MGB. She was co-investigator and is now the principal investigator of an American Medical Association (AMA) Reimagining Residency grant piloting, “Promotion in Place,” a specific model of competency-based time-variable residency training. Dr. Goldhamer is a past member of the American Medical Association (AMA) Accelerating Change in Medical Education Consortium and the AMA Reimagining Residency Medical Education Evaluator Community of Practice and a current member of the International Competency-based Health Professions Educators Collaborative. Dr. Goldhamer is the Director of Evaluation for the Harvard Kidney Urology Hematology Training Institute (HKUHTI) and co-chair of the NIH/NIDDK Kidney Urology Hematology (KUH) Research Training Network Working Group.

Ronald B. Hirschl, MD, MS, FACS, MAMSE

Ronald B. Hirschl, MD is the Arnold G. Coran Professor of Surgery and Head of the Section of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Michigan. He trained in Pediatric Surgery at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and joined the staff at the University of Michigan in 1991. Dr. Hirschl is board certified in General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care and has his Master’s Degree in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis. 

His research and clinical areas of interest and expertise are in the management of respiratory failure, especially with extracorporeal support (ECLS, ECMO. Dr. Hirschl is a general Pediatric Surgeon and led the development of the MidWest Pediatric Surgery Consortium (MWPSC). He also has expertise in applied informatics and was the Chief Medical Information Officer for the University of Michigan Health System. Dr. Hirschl was a Director of the American Board of Surgery, served on the Surgery RRC, and is exploring innovative approaches to competency based, time-variable training in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery. He is the Past-President of the American Pediatric Surgical Association. Dr. Hirschl currently serves as the Associate Chief Medical Strategy Officer for Michigan Medicine with an emphasis on Pediatric initiatives.

Brenessa Lindeman, MD, MEHP, FACS, MAMSE

Brenessa Lindeman, MD, MEHP, is Professor and Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Surgery, and Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. An eastern Kentucky native, she graduated summa cum laude from the University of Louisville and Alpha Omega Alpha as the Founder’s Medalist at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.  She completed General Surgery residency and earned a Masters of Education in the Health Professions at Johns Hopkins University, then completed simultaneous fellowships in Endocrine Surgery and Surgical Education at Harvard Medical School.  At UAB, she also serves as the Fellowship Director for Endocrine Surgery. She is a Councilor for the American Board of Surgery, Chair of the Competency-Based Board Admissibility Task Force, General Surgery Board Vice-Chair, Member of the ACS Master Surgeon Educators, and Immediate Past President of the Association for Academic Surgery. Her research interests are in assessment of surgical trainee competency, including Entrustable Professional Activities. 

Brenessa Lindeman, MD, MEHP, is a Professor of Surgery, Pediatrics, and Medical Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she serves as Vice Chair of Education, Fellowship Director for Endocrine Surgery and the Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education. A native of eastern Kentucky, she completed her undergraduate training summa cum laude at the University of Louisville and was the Founder's Medalist at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.  She completed general surgery training at Johns Hopkins, and endocrine surgery fellowship at Harvard/Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She earned a Master of Education in the Health Professions from Johns Hopkins and has mentored more than 30 students, residents, and postdocs in endocrine surgery, surgical education, and competency-based assessment. She has led work to develop and study Entrustable Professional Activities for the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and the American Board of Surgery for whom she is a Councilor and Vice-Chair of the General Surgery Board. She is also Immediate Past President of the Association for Academic Surgery. 

Moderator

The session will be moderated by Mohsen Shabahang, MD, PhD, FACS, MAMSE, who until recently was the vice president and chief medical officer of the WellSpan Surgery Service Line in York, PA. After four years at WellSpan, Dr. Shabahang is pursuing a Masters in Leadership and Organizational Change at Case Western Reserve University. Currently, Dr. Shabahang serves as the Chair of the Subcommittee of Novel Teaching and Assessment Methods and Educational Resources for the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators.

Opening Remarks

Ajit K. Sachdeva, MD, FACS, FRCSC, FSACME, MAMSE, will deliver opening remarks. Dr. Sachdeva is the Senior Vice President of the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators at the American College of Surgeons. He was the founding director of the ACS Division of Education, where he established educational programs for surgeons, surgery residents, medical students and members of surgical teams. Under Dr. Sachdeva’s leadership, several major education and training initiatives were launched, including the Program for Accreditation of Education Institutes (simulation centers); ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators; and an innovative Patient Education Program. Dr. Sachdeva also serves as adjunct professor of surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University.

Dr. Sachdeva was awarded the Distinguished Educator Award (a lifetime achievement award) by the Association for Surgical Education, and the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Healthcare Simulation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. He has also received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Blockley-Osler Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching, the Board of Trustees’ Award for Teaching Excellence, and Golden Apple Awards for teaching excellence. Dr. Sachdeva has served on the boards of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and Accreditation Council for Graduation Medical Education (ACGME). Dr. Sachdeva has served as president of the Association for Surgical Education, president of the American Association for Cancer Education, president of the Alliance for Clinical Education, president of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, and president of the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education.
