Dr. L. Scott Levin is the Paul B. Magnuson Professor of Bone and Joint Surgery, chairman emeritus department of orthopaedic surgery, and professor of surgery (plastic surgery) at Penn Medicine. He is also the director of the Penn Musculoskeletal and Rheumatology Service Line.

As an accomplished clinician, his expertise focuses on surgery of the hand and upper extremity, reconstructive microsurgical techniques for extremity reconstruction and limb salvage. His research interests focus predominantly on extremity soft tissue reconstruction and vascularized composite allotransplantation. Dr. Levin heads the Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation Program at Penn and directed the teams that performed bilateral hand and arm transplants in four adults. In 2015, as director of the Pediatric Hand Transplantation Program of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, he led the team that
performed the world’s first bilateral hand transplant in a child.

Dr. Levin also actively participates in senior leadership activities of many international and national professional societies and associations. Currently, Dr. Levin is editor-in-chief of the journal Orthoplastic Surgery (Wolters Kluwer),  further advancing the academic foundation of the specialty he pioneered. 

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to surgery, education, and innovation, Dr. Levin was named the Rodman E. Sheen and Thomas G. Sheen Award, 2025, underscoring his global impact on medicine and leadership in advancing reconstructive and orthoplastic surgery.

Host and Welcome Remarks

The host for the Fireside Chat is Mohsen M. Shabahang, MD, PhD, FACS, MAMSE, who until recently was the vice president and chief medical officer of the WellSpan Surgery Service Line in York, PA. After four years at WellSpan, Dr. Shabahang is pursuing a Masters in Leadership and Organizational Change at Case Western Reserve University. Currently, Dr. Shabahang serves as the Chair of the Subcommittee of Novel Teaching and Assessment Methods and Educational Resources for the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators.

Ajit K. Sachdeva, MD, FACS, FRCSC, FSACME, MAMSE, Senior Vice President of the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators and Co-Chair of the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators, will deliver welcoming remarks.
