With a renewed emphasis on multidisciplinary content, Clinical Congress 2024 will make clear the breadth and depth of the House of Surgery.

“In our specialty society meetings, we find great content regarding our areas of expertise, but it’s rare to find something with the contribution of other disciplines,” said Fabrizio Michelassi, MD, FACS, Vice-Chair of the ACS Board of Regents and Chair of the Clinical Congress Program Committee. “The ACS, as the House of Surgery, brings all the surgeons together and provides the opportunity to create these multidisciplinary panels, which are of interest to a wide range of surgeons.”

Some of the clinical multidisciplinary Panel Sessions available next month include:

  • “Intensive Care Unit Management of Spinal Cord Injured Patients” (Sunday Thematic Session), which is relevant to neurological surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, and trauma and acute care surgeons
  • “Fournier’s Gangrene: Multidisciplinary Management,” which is relevant to colorectal surgeons, urologic surgeons, and obstetric and gynecologic surgeons
  • “Assessment and Management of Ocular, Orbital, and Skull-Based Injuries,” which is relevant to otolaryngologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, neurological surgeons, ophthalmologists, and trauma surgeons
  • “All about Fistulae: Multidisciplinary Management,” which is relevant gastrointestinal surgeons, urologists, and obstetric and gynecologic surgeons
  • “Evaluation and Management of Patients with Secondary and Tertiary Renal Hyperparathyroidism,” which is relevant to endocrine surgeons, urologists, and general surgeons
  • “Current Management of Major Abdominal Vascular Injuries,” which is relevant to vascular surgeons, trauma and acute care surgeons, and general surgeons

Some multidisciplinary panels also will look beyond the OR with nonclinical sessions that are relevant to all disciplines:

  • “Artificial Intelligence in Surgery: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” (Sunday Day Thematic Session)
  • “Addressing Mental Health, Substance Use Disorders, and Suicide among Surgeons”
  • “Cultivating the Next Generation of Surgeon-Scientists”
  • “Prehabilitation: How to Identify and Optimize Patients”
  • “The Fundamentals of Communication in Surgery”

Some multidisciplinary content, such as building antireflux programs in rural areas, military-civilian surgical partnership, physician extenders, and synoptic notes for nononcologic operations, will be presented via more informal Town Hall discussions or Meet-the-Expert sessions (note: Meet-the-Expert sessions require additional registration).

No matter your area of expertise, Clinical Congress 2024 will have multidisciplinary content meaningful to your practice. Make sure to access the multidisciplinary track on the Interactive Program Planner for more details.
